Main Tour Event 3 took place at The Craigpark Masters, 164 Craigpark, Dennistoun, Glasgow G31 2HE

Congratulations to Mark Boyle on returning to the top of Scottish Snookers Main Tour Rankings. Mark's capture of Event 3 and the 100pts accumulated in the process assures him of sitting atop the Rankings over the festive period and into the new year.
Mark had an emphatic, one sided 5-0 win over Perth's Bobby Cruickshanks. This result knocked Bobby from the top of the Rankings and now sets up the 2nd half of the season to be a stonker with it looking like being nip and tuck all the way to Finals day for the coveted No.1 spot.
Mark and Bobby now sit on 210pts apiece, (Mark takes the No.1 spot on the "last best result" rule) with Anthony McGill sitting nicely placed in 3rd spot on 200pts.
Ross Vallance 4th, Thomas McSorley 5th, Fraser Patrick 6th, Michael Philbin 7th & Michael Maguire in 8th make up the top 8 at present.
That group would make a strong Mens Home International Team come September, but I'm sure we will see a few changes before the end of the season.
In the other semi final Greenock's Thomas McSorley edged out Bo'ness's Michael Philbin by 5 frames to 3 in a long drawn out tense battle.
In the final itself, Mark led 5-0 before Thomas got his eye in and started to claw the frames back. Mark had a great brown to black clearance for the match to save it going 5-4.
Well done to all the semi finalists, especially Mark Boyle for emerging victorious on the day.
Go on Mr Magic!

TOURNAMENT REPORT from Mr JIM STEWART (Thank You Jim)
The Craigpark Masters played host to the first installment of Main Tour Event 3. It was disappointing to see a couple of no-shows resulting in byes, but the conduct and standard on the day from the 27 players on display was excellent throughout.
From the Last 64 matches, tie of the round was surely the up-and-coming Michael Leslie, the reigning U16 No.1 and National Champion against Scottish snooker’s seasoned campaigner, Stevie Baillie. It was a tight and tense affair, with Leslie grinding out a 3-1 lead. In the fourth frame with only pink and black remaining, the match was finely poised, but a rare tactical slip from the experienced Baillie allowed Michael a nervy pink to the middle pocket, which he dropped in to walk out a 4-1 winner. As always, Stevie was first to congratulate his opponent - who earned an encounter with Mark Boyle in the Last 32. Davie Hutchison donned the white gloves to officiate over a tough battle between Alan Hall and Bob McCabe. In a highly tactical game, Scottish Snooker’s reigning golf champion was called upon to replace the balls after several miss calls, and in the end it was the evergreen McCabe who advanced to the next round. On Table 10, Gary Hendry saw off Jim Stewart 4-0 in just over an hour to earn a game against Dawud Qadir. Also, in just over an hour (three to be exact), The Masters’ own Billy Boyce came through a marathon game to book his place in the next round. In the bottom tie, Carluke’s William Thomson was unlucky to draw the current rankings leader Bobby Cruickshanks. Bobby prevailing 4-1 on this occasion, but William is certainly living up to his reputation as one of Scottish Snooker’s most improved players.

Experience prevailed in the Last 32, with Mark Boyle and Bob McCabe cruising to comfortable wins over Michael Leslie and Ross Higgins respectively. Ian Wells began to move up the gears in a 4-1 victory over Kenny White. In the tightest game of the round, Gary Hendry potted a difficult pink and black in Frame 6 to catch Dawud Qadir at 3-3. In the final frame, a gutsy 40 break by the Q Club’s Qadir was enough to see him move into the Last 16. David McSorley ousted Billy Boyce by 4 frames to 1, and Crawford Mitchell can count himself unlucky after a sterling effort against Bobby Cruickshanks. A series of kicks in this match made it tough for the players to score heavily, and although Crawford had his fair share of chances, Bobby sealed a 4-2 victory.

Tie of the round in the Last 16 was Ian Wells against Dawud Qadir. Ian raced into a 3-1 lead, making a 90 break with two remaining reds in the opener. Dawud clawed his way back to level at 3-3 with a few 30’s and 40’s, setting up a final frame decider. Ian spent the first half of the frame on his chair, with Dawud eventually missing a relatively easy pink to the corner on 43. Ian then came back to the table and knocked in a quickfire 50 break. His positional play was faultless, and looked like he was going to clear up when attempting a deep screw from pink to the final yellow and mis-cued the white. Dawud was simply relieved to get another chance and knocked in the next few colours to progress. Mark Boyle, in great form after recently winning the Edinburgh Open, was able to outscore Bob McCabe and won the first four frames to advance. Calum Niven overturned The Red Triangle’s Mark Caulfield by the same margin, and although a worthy winner, the scoreline may have flattered to deceive with Mark battling hard throughout. David McSorley ran Bobby Cruickshanks close in the first few frames of their match, but the seeded International and PIOS player also made it through by four frames to nil.

Three of the four seeded players made it to the quarters in this half of the draw with the first encounter seeing proud new father Mark Boyle against last year’s Scotland No.9 Calum Niven. Calum took the first frame, and looked like doubling his lead in a nervy second, but Mark came back to square up the match on the colours. There was no looking back from that point on, and finally progressed 4-1. Like the top players tend to do, Main Tour Event 2 winner Cruickshanks improved as the tournament went on, and ran out a four frames to nil winner over Dawud Qadir.
Many thanks to Tommy Patrick for presiding over events and making sure the day ran smoothly, and also the referees who graciously gave over their time in assisting with various matches across the course of the event.

These results see Boyle and Cruickshanks face off at The Craigpark Masters again on Sunday 21st December. Also in attendance will be the two qualifiers from McGill, McSorley, Vallance, McDonald, Patrick and Co. who all enter the Last 64 stage next Sunday looking to catch Cruickshanks at the top of the rankings – and with it that all important professional ticket to the main tour.
