View Full Version : Scottish Snooker Roll Of Honour - Past Champions

McGill, Anthony
04-12-2007, 03:28 PM
OK, I've tried to piece together a Scottish Snooker Roll of Honour, naming all the past Champions of the age groups. I think it'd be great to have a Roll Of Honour on the site to give it a bit more history.

I'm not 100% certain on all of these, I got most of my info from www.globalcuesportscentre.com, then PM'd a couple of people asking for info and so on.

If anyone out there has ANY kind of info for the Roll of Honour, please post your knowledge, it would be much help.

PS Sorry about the scattered text, can't get it into a neat table.

Good effort Sir - ta for spending the time to do this. Hope anyone else out there can contribute too.

Nice one.

No problem, I think it will be a great addition to the site. Many people come on here, and also many that have been involved in Scottish Snooker for a number of years, there must be people out there who can fill in the gaps.

Thanks for doing this bud.

A few omissions and corrections are required.
One or two that spring to mind is that I know Mick Maguire was twice winner of "The Scottish Amateur Championship". I think you have inserted the old SSA winners into spaces that should have been filled with the NGB winners not the breakaway SSA Association Winners.
I don't know if Janie is even aware of this.

This is one of the problems of people forming and playing in breakaway Associations from their officially recognised NGB in the past.

I was also personally trounced by Davie Sneddon on finals day 2 or 3 years ago on Table 5 in the Masters, you were duffing up Davie Patterson on Table 8 on the same day.
I remember vividly, as neither Davey or myself could see the bottom bags due to the glare from the lights on table 8.

A fantastic effort though and very much appreciated.
I will leave the thread to run for a while in order to get various members input, of which I will update the thread above on the verified info we hopefully receive.
Once the info is completed I will take the thread info and create an entirely seperate Thread/Section for it as a standalone section to be added to year on year.
Thanks Ants

PS Any non members with info on this topic (or anything else) can contact Scottish Snooker by clicking on the contact us link on the home page.

OK cool, one thing I was thinking of doing was just starting it from a few years back, when SSL started up and since there hasn't been SBSA and SSA and all this. But I thought thsi would be unfair on past champions, so I included all I could find.

Baillie, Stevie
04-12-2007, 11:38 PM
No, I think for us to keep a truly accurate and valuable historical "Roll of Honour" that it is quite straightforward to list the recognised NGB Amateur Champions as all others just do not hold merit.
Simple.

Baillie, Stevie
05-12-2007, 07:29 AM
That's correct mate, and it is what I meant.
So we would need to rake to ascertain who was the recognised NGB for those particular years.
I am meeting with European officials this morning - picking them up at Prestwick Airport - to finalise arrangements for the 3 European Events in Glasgow next April. So I will get the research started at this level.
I'm sure with EVERYONE's help we will be able to form a very accurate reference.

Hi Anthony, I have a list of past champions and scores going way back I will need to get it to you. A couple I know off the top of my head are: under 19 champion 1984 Mick Maguire,1985 Mark Cadenhead(Largs) cracking player beat Stephen Hendry in semi. 1987 Drew Hendry. Stevie Muir beat Duncan Campbell in 1986 Amateur final.

O'Donnell, William

Ants!

1997, James mc Bain beat Sean Iqbal 5 1 in the U21's, my first ever tournament!! Lost to Sean in quarters 3 2.

So will you help decipher all the permutations?
Or will we just stick to registering the NGB Winners?

Only trying to simplify what could turn out to be an impossible task otherwise.
Any ideas?

Guys i'd like to mention myself that i did win the S.B.S.A National Championship on 2 occations.
The 1st year was 1996 beaten Neil Martin 6-4 in the final & the following year 1997 beaten Jim McNellan 6-1 both these finals were held at the Q club Glasgow.
It is my understanding that at the time of winning these title's S.B.S.A were officially recognised by the I.B.S.F as the National Governing Body for snooker in Scotland.
I was made aware of this by the Chairman then Mr Alan Craig.

McGill, Anthony
08-12-2007, 06:02 PM
I was talking to Scott Dunbar today, he told me in 1998 and 99, it was ranking events he won, not the actual Scottish Championship, so you can remove his name from those years.

Baillie, Stevie
08-12-2007, 06:02 PM
Cheers for the info guys.
I have attached the association in brackets after the result.
For now we will continue to populate the board with as much info as we can, and then at a later date we can decide what or how to display the info.
No probs either way.
As long as those who did achieve are recorded then that should be suffice to keep everyone happy.
Cheers

Not quite right though. He lost to Michael in the Final in 85 Coz Michael done me in the semis. But I won it in 86 beating Chris 4-1. Then I got banned and John Lardner won it in 87 dont know who he beat then Chris won it in 88 dont know who he beat either.
I never won the amateur in 91 it was the amateur open. Pretty sure Marcus beat Cadenhead 9-6 that year to win it.

Looks like we will need better resources than individual re-collections to ensure validity with this thread.
Maybe Michael Valentine can confirm/correct dates?
Anyone care to ask Michael if you are still in touch with him.
Thanks

Michael Valentine definitely won in 1986 as he was going for the double that year. He won the under 16 one week and I played him in the under 19's the following. Craig are you sure you did not win in 1987? I remember watching your final against Chris Small in Spencers. 22 years ago! scary.

Johnny Kemp beat me 8-1 in the 1991 final at the Ambassadeur club

I have the runner up trophy as a reminder.

Great potter was Johnny.

No, its got 1986 on my winners trophy. I remember losing to Michael in the semis the year before the same year you beat him in the final of the under 19s. What year does it say on your under 19 trophy? If I have to scan a photo I will.

I got banned in 87. that was the year they introduced junior ranking tournaments. When Richy and Mcmanus came on the scene.

I got the u19 trophy to keep as Rab Thallon's Scope clothing made it their last year of sponsoring the event. Engraved on it 1984 Michael Maguire, 1985 Mark Cadenhead, 1986 Sean Boxall. A bit confusing.

As it is the History of our game at National level it well deserves such.

does any one have any information on a certain george carnagie, i just heard last week he is still playing in framptons at the age of 80 years young, i have never met him but heard he was a bit of player in his day.

Brownlie, John
24-02-2009, 12:15 PM
George is a legend. He was unbeaten at home as no1 cue for something stupid like 12 years and thats playing guys like Sinclair and Phillips.

I remember playing in the cue club in SSA event and George was playing a thin Tam McSorley on the next table. Anyway Tam misses the last black or the yellow or something for a chance of max in the first frame.

George finishes his second pint, sends his wee pal away for the next and an hour later Tam has only seen the back of the green and is out.

George must have been around 70 at that time.

Hard, hard match players these guys and it is something that is lacking in many of the young players today, good and all as they are.

Yeah Georgie Boy was an excellent elder hack at "Snooker".
He was a former West of Scotland Champion on several occassions.
He accompanied Stephen Hendry to his first IBSF World Amateur Championship (1984) in Ireland.

How do I know this you may ask?
Well George was a relative of mine as he was related to my Grans side of the family through marriage.
I still remember visiting my grans between 6 & 11 years old and sitting listening to "Uncle George" extolling to my Mum & Dad and, all the family, of his Snooker exploits and achievements of the time.
I was a football man (boy!) at the time, but still remember the interest most of the family had in George's progress.
Ah................. them were the days !

In fact, I'm gonna phone him and see if he wants to play in the Masters (Over 40's) events, I think he makes it.
Would be great to see him back, and I'll bet we could all learn a thing or two from him - even now!
