MATCH REPORTS:
Basic format of round robin very popular with all players – all very pleased to have played more than 1 player.
Almost every parent / guardian very in favour of format.
The 3 way play off in group B aroused many comments. Some said bit harsh (So are penalties to decide World Cup Finals - But we need to have some way of finding a qualifier within the timescale on the day - StevieB) however, aside from playing a single frame decider, a realistic alternative seemed elusive. Playing a single frame could and probably would have taken quite a while and may have ended with the same round 2 of the play off !!
One parent (whose son had lost in the play off) was very excited by it and volunteered the quote of the day afterwards - “You could here a pin drop”.
The play off took over half an hour and 2 rounds to yield a winner which was a surprise to almost everyone. Without wishing to pass judgement (as I am still undecided), should we maybe consider the boys keeping a note of the frame scores in the league games so that in the event of a tie and head to head not settling, then perhaps cumulative points could decide who goes through ?? Consider.
Maybe so, but if we introduced this method we would have frames running forever as kids would play on and on....... to accumulate points when frames are won "out the park". Then we would have complaints of folk not getting home til late! - StevieB
All in all, in addition to the play offs, 28 games had been played and a fair number of parents/guardians stayed for most, if not all, of the event.
Many thanks to all players and parents/guardians/support for making what turned out to be a very different format into a truly memorable day.
Congratulations to Greg and Campbell for both putting on a very entertaining final.
Match Report by Alec Cameron (Father of Aaron Cameron)
As per always the young uns were very well behaved and serious about there game along with a sense of getting to know each other better as the season gets into swing.
With Campbell Dunlop not dropping a frame in the group stage it looked like another trophy was heading back to Killie but Edinburgh's Greg Ritchie had other thoughts.
Ross Muir and Declan Lilley struggled to find there best form, while showing great progress were Thomas McLeod, Antony Nardone, Dylan Craig, Lee Mein, Kilmarnock newcomer Tony McNally and Arron Cameron who managed to soldier on and play very well despite a broken left arm, well done wee man.
The last frame of the group stage was fought between Campbell Dunlop and Glagow's Joanne Ballie. Campbell seemed to let down his guard slightly and the ever improving "Jo-Jo" took full advantage of this by taking the frame down to the last few colours before Campbell grabbed it on the blue and pink.
A tense painstaking Black Ball shoot out was fought between G Ritchie, A Nardone and D Craig with Greg winning through to the Semi's where he managed to beat Thomas McLeod and Campbell Dunlop beating tough opponent Lee Mein.
In the final Greg won the first frame well and Campbell rallied back in the next missing the final pink and black for close on a 50 clearance.
But it was young Greg's day from the start as he played a good consistent standard of snooker. Both these lads made a few breaks over 30 throughout the day.
Congratulations to Greg on winning his first Under 14s event and to all involved, including Alec Cameron for his organising and refereeing skills.
Match Report by Robert Dunlop (Father of Campbell Dunlop)
SPECIAL MENTION:
Must surely go to young Aaron Cameron (Bathgate) who played with a full plaster cast on his recently broken left arm (done when climbing a fence!)
There was no-one more surprised than Alec, Aaron's father, at the way Aaron Cameron managed to compete in all his games having won 2 and narrowly lost the other 2. Aaron finished in 3rd place in his group!
Many of his fellow players and parents/guardians were very encouraging to Aaron for his determination and competitive spirit shown on the day.
Alec (Aaron's Dad) would has asked me to convey his thanks to ALL the players and parents who offered their best wishes to young Aaron.
Well done folks.
